If we’re talking desserts, guaranteed the first words out of my mouth will be ice cream. There’s a flavor for everyone, it can be eaten in a bowl or cone, inside or outside, summer or winter (yes, give me a coat, I don’t care what the temperature is.) On a four day family ski vacation we’ve been known to stop at our favorite ice cream place five times. Obviously this obsession was cultivated by someone…Thanks Dad. ;)

Shoot a series of ice cream that feels elevated by creating intricate garnishes seen in cocktails.

“Where does one source purple waffles cones?” quickly become the question during preproduction. With retailers in two states not offering colored cones and shipping proving to result in damaged ones, we moved to testing and making our own in house. Multiple batches later, we locked in the right recipe and food coloring combo to get that brilliant deep purple. But we couldn’t stop there! Purple cones turned into a golden toned gradation to keep playing up that monochromatic look throughout this series.

Opting to keep the set minimal and colorful allowed us to highlight all the textures with bold lighting and pull in a monochromatic theme matching the background to product color.

To sum it up, homemade ice cream cones, frosty blackberries, mint wrangling, smashing cone after cone, filling them with epoxy for easy access / adjustments, and lots of ice cream drips later, this idea not only came to life but grew throughout the process.

For me, it all starts with a sketch. The idea quickly developing beyond that initial scribble moving from concepts to flavor pairings to notes squeezed in the margins.

Here’s where we started brainstorming this one.
